"USA: We're No. 1!" Oh, wait — Iceland is No. 1. But we did beat out Poland and Slovakia, right? Uh...no. But go on down the rankings and there we are! No. 27, fifth from the bottom. So our new national chant is, "USA: At Least We're Not Last!"
Millions of Americans will be forced into poverty in the coming years even as the US hauls itself out of the longest and deepest recession since the second world war. A study from Indiana University, released on Wednesday, says the number of Americans living below the povert …
"Safety net programs such as food stamps and tax credits kept poverty from rising even higher in 2010, but for many low-income families with work-related and medical expenses, they are considered too 'rich' to qualify," said Sheldon Danziger, a University of Michigan public pol …
At the very end of their 369-page bill, Republicans included instructions to CBO on how to score the bill to try to make it abide by the rules. They tried to get CBO to credit flood insurance reforms with $4.9 billion in savings, but CBO refused to do so. They also tried to g …
In 1935, FDR signed the National Labor Relations Act, which gave workers the right to join unions, and made it the policy of the United States to encourage employers to bargain with workers over wages, health care and retirement.
Two factors accounted for the changing distribution ofmarket income.
Conservatives are continuing their counter-protest against the so-called "47 percent." Specifically, that's the share of recession-era households that pay no federal income taxes.
Anyone who wants to understand the enduring nature of Occupy Wall Street and similar protests across the country need only look at the first official data on 2010 paychecks, which the U.S.

Ladies, thanks for the kind words. Just remember that we have to get up and do our best every day. Some days, we will make more progress than others. Other days, it's a wash. Don't give up. Don't take 'no' for an answer. Keep knocking on doors til your knuckles swell. One will open. Everything passes - the good and the bad. Remember that God doesn't do bad stuff to us - people do. God can step in and change things; just ask. Lygeia, you might want to read Psalm 27 (verse 10 is the key). Calico, Psalm 5. For both, Psalm 9. Read on. These are comforts. This is not about church or man-made doctrine. This is about connecting directly with God - there's a big difference. Read Numbers 6:24-27. Be well, both.
Thanks for the compassion on the FS thread. Most people see FS users as subhuman, when in fact they are using them to survive with their kids. I know I am one of them. Getting laid off from my county job and the husband getting laid off the very next day because someone would take a 6 dollar pay cut for his job, we know what its like to need some compassion.
I really appreciate your thoughtful intelligent discourse on the thread about California's budget crisis. I am a a member of the working poor, trying to raise children on nothing, trying to dig myself out of the hole I got into just being born into a f***ed up family. I realize I made mistakes in this life (like dropping out of H.S.), but now as I try to mend them, I find that the safety net I was counting on is frayed beyond hope. I ask myself how I will feed my children on an income of less than $1000 a month. How will I pay for childcare, for gas and car repairs, when Cal Works is eliminated? I would love to have a full-time job that pays a living wage so that I could afford all this on my own. But now I think I'm going to have to drop out of school before I could even get a certificate. I'm scared to death. I don't even have enough money to move out of state or I would. I wish more people had the insight you do. So many people pass judgement without knowing what a person has suffered in this life.
